Ware Shoals man trains to do 10,000 burpees for charity

Posted: Updated:

An Upstate man is training to beat a world record of 7,684 burpees in just 24 hours for charity.

Endurance athlete Cameron Dorn says his goal is to actually perform 10,000 burpees, one for each dollar he hopes to raise for his group aimed at helping kids in school on two different continents.

Breaking the world record would make Dorn the first world record holder in South Carolina for an athletic activity.

"I wouldn't attempt something I didn't think I could do. So I think I've got a really good chance," said Dorn.

Performing the 10,000 burpees means he may lose up to 10 pounds in the 24-hour period. To prepare Dorn says he's doing a lot of cross training.

"I'll run two miles, do 200 burpees, complete that set six times," said Dorn.

He says he's even ready for the worst, an injury.

"I've been doing one legged burpees, I'm doing them as a backup," said Dorn.

He says the extreme challenge is all for the dollar sign. He's hoping to raise money to fund track supplies for Ware Shoals High School, and also send general school supplies to Seeds of Hope in Peru. He hopes the two schools will also develop a relationship and the students will become pen pals. If more than $10,000 is raised, it will be used to start up a non-profit called Grooming Leaders aimed at giving young people the tools to succeed.

His burpee challenge will take place at the Sweatbox in Greenwood on May 16-17. Organizers are also holding team challenges that will take place that day to raise money. There will be food, fun and music. The public is invited to stop by the 24-hour event.
