Deputies: Road closed after fatal accident, hazmat issue

NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Newberry County Sheriff's office is reporting that Highway 121 South of Whitmire at Duncan Creek is closed due to fatality and hazmat issue.

Deputies say a tractor-trailer and a car crashed Saturday morning. One person is dead and another is injured. The tractor-trailer leaked diesel fuel, forcing deputies to shut down a portion of SC 121 south of Whitmire at Duncan Creek.

Lance Cpl. Tony Keller with the South Carolina Highway Patrol says the driver of the tractor trailer was not injured in the accident.

Keller said Alisha Taylor, 23 was driving a 2008 Chrysler. Taylor was traveling north when she crossed over the center line and hit the tractor trailer, driven by Michael Ivey, 35 head on. Taylor was airlifted to Richland memorial hospital. Her passenger, was pronounced dead on the scene. All three people involved in the accident were wearing their seatbelts.

Traffic is being routed off SC 121 North onto Old Newberry Highway to SC Highway 66.

Traffic on 121 South are being detoured onto SC Highway 66 and to Old Newberry Highway.

SCDOT is enroute to assess the situation and establish a permanent route.

There is no estimate of closure time.

Hazmat crews are on the scene and are working to contain the spill.

SCHP/State Transport will also have investigative teams on the scene due to the fatality and a commercial truck being involved.

Newberry County Sheriff's Office, Whitmire Police Department, Whitmire Fire and Rescue crews are assisting in the detour of traffic and the clean up with Newberry County hazmat.

DHEC has also been called to consult due to the proximity to Duncan Creek. Incident Command does not think fuel has reached the creek at this time

The Newberry County Coroner's Office is on the scene.
