The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a man died from a gunshot wound to the head Saturday.

Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said around 5:30 a.m. Kershaw County 911 dispatch received a call regarding a motor vehicle crash and vehicle on fire near the intersection of Black River Rd and Pathfinder Trail in Camden.

In one of several subsequent calls to Kershaw County dispatch, a caller stated that she had heard gunshots coming from the vicinity of the vehicle crash, Matthews said.

"A nearby Kershaw County Sheriff's Office deputy responded to the scene and discovered a 1999 Ford Taurus in a ditch, on fire with the driver behind the wheel," Matthews said. "The responding deputy attempted to put the fire out, but was unsuccessful. He was able to extract the driver from the vehicle before it went up in flames."

The driver of the vehicle, 25-year-old Antwan Mario Dixon, of Camden was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland where it was discovered that he had been shot in the head, Matthews said.

"Investigators later found multiple bullet holes in the vehicle and numerous spent shell casings on the road way," Matthews said.

Dixon later died as a result of the gunshot wound to his head.

Anyone who has information that could aid in the investigation is encouraged to contact Crimestoppers at 1-888-274-6372 or the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office Investigations at 803-425-1512.
