Several dozen students are protesting the selection of Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell as the new president of the College of Charleston.

The students gathered on the campus at midday Monday to protest the selection of McConnell, a Civil War re-enactor and member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. McConnell was unanimously selected Saturday as president by the college trustees.

McConnell has responded to criticism saying he has worked in the legislature to increase the number of black judges in the state and get lottery money for black colleges.

Trustee Chairman Greg Padgett said the board considered campus feedback about all the presidential candidates. Padgett said all the campus constituencies are never going to agree and called McConnell a "careful and thoughtful choice."

There are 11,500 students on campus.
