BBB: Scammer creates bogus rental ad on Craigslist for deceased man's property

LANDRUM, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Landrum man is warning consumers after he almost was scammed into renting a property in Spartanburg after seeing an ad on Craigslist that turned out to be bogus.

Daniel Hughes, 23, lives with his mother but is in the market to rent a home for himself. He looked on Craigslist and found a property in the Spartanburg area and called the poster.

The man who posted the ad said he was deaf and could only communicate with Hughes via text or email. Hughes said the man tried to get him to wire money to a Moneygram account as a security deposit.

"The red flags started truly when they were communicating back and forth by email," said Vee Daniel with Upstate Better Business Bureau.

The property also had a for sale sign, and should not have even been on Craigslist, Daniel said.

"He said 'disregard the for sale sign in the yard,'" Daniel said, "'because we've decided to lease it instead of sell it.'" Another lie, Hughes discovered.

The home is still being sold by RM Duncan Realty. That agency told FOX Carolina the BBB reached out to them to inform them the home was part of a scam on Craigslist.

Hughes decided to dig even deeper. He said he discovered the man the scammer was claiming to be died last year. The BBB confirmed that discovery.

The BBB said consumers should beware of sellers who will not talk to them face to face.
