COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An inmate serving a prison sentence in connection with an Upstate case is accused of killing a fellow prisoner in a fight, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

SLED has charged William Robertson, 31, with voluntary manslaughter in the January death of Theodore Evans.

According to SLED, Robertson hit Evans with a broom during a fight, causing Evans to fall back and hit his head on the wall and toilet of their cell at Evans Correctional Institution in Bennettsville. Authorities said Evans died from his injuries.

The Department of Corrections asked SLED to investigate Evans' death, which will be prosecuted by the Fourth Circuit Solicitor's Office.

According to the 13th Circuit Solicitor's Office online records, Robertson was sentenced in Greenville County in 2008 in connection with an armed robbery and drug offense. The records say he was arrested Jan. 11, 2007.

According to his DOC prison record, Robertson's projected release date is Dec. 13, 2015. The record shows he has earned more than a dozen work credits in addition to five disciplinary actions resulting in numerous loss of privileges.
