RUTHERFORDTON, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A man was arrested after deputies said he tried to enter the Rutherford County courthouse with a handgun on Tuesday.

The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said Keith King was entering the courthouse when he set off the metal detector.

King said he had his cell phone in his pocket and would return it to his car, according to deputies.

Sgt. Scott Patrick and Capt. Sonny Chapman followed King to his car where they found a handgun, which they said King removed from his pocket, according to the sheriff's office.

King has been charged with carrying a concealed gun and possession of a weapon on state/courthouse property.
