ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate man caught a nearly record breaking flathead catfish in an area river on Wednesday.

Danny Aderhold, of Anderson, reeled in the catfish weighing over 79 pounds,  9.6 ounces while fishing in the Cooper River around 2 p.m.

Although Aderhold's catch is technically the state's largest, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said it must beat the previous record by more than 8 ounces to take the title.

He missed it by only a few ounces.

"Where I come from if you win by a hundredth of a second or an ounce you win so that's just the way we play. That's the rules we play by. Hey, I'm not going to let a technicality rain on my parade if you know what I mean," Aderhold told FOX Carolina.

Aderhold said he plans to have the fish mounted.
