Richmond police continue to seek identity of murdered Jane Doe

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Richmond police released a sketch Wednesday of a murdered woman who has yet to be identified. "Jane Doe" was found in a Southside ravine Monday morning.

According to Richmond police, a passerby found the body below a footbridge off North Hopkins Road. People who live in the area say, they're on edge.

"It's scary," said Carlos Scruggs. Scruggs lives right around the corner from where the body was found. "We started seeing a lot of canvassing Monday evening when we got home. We didn't know what was going on until we got a knock on the door."

Scruggs says it was two detectives who showed he and his wife pictures of the woman's tattoos.

According to a former forensic consultant who has no connection with the case, it appears the woman had been dead for at least a day.

"The body is severely dehydrated so that tells me there's been at least 36-hours of rigor and decomposition," said Tammy Smith. Smith studied criminology at VCU and formerly worked as a consultant in the criminal justice system.

"The skin is already coming away from her hands but that could be because she fought," said Smith. "She's tough, she's a street girl and she's hardcore."

Smith believes people in the area know Jane Doe because of her look. Police say she's only 4-10 with buzzed hair.

"She made an impression it's just a matter of someone coming forward to say who she is. She had family, friends, she had people who do care and love her. We just need to get her where she needs to be at this point."

Richmond police still don't know if the woman is from the area, but if you have any information call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 780-1000.
