Laurens anti-littering campaign creates some controversy

Posted: Updated:
LAURENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The City of Laurens will post new anti-littering signs Friday that may turn a few heads.

It's part of the city's 2014 Don't Trash Laurens campaign. Three different signs will be posted, but one sign is already gaining some controversy.

The agency says they aimed to send a not-so-nice message to litterbugs and are very happy with the new sign that reads "Don't litter, Jack***, that means you!"

Only one of the signs had been posted Thursday, and there is a mixed reaction from residents.

"I think its funny, something new I haven't seen before," said Jobori Cooke.

Others say the message is a bit too much, but does get the point across.

"It is rude, but I mean if no one's going to tell them someone's got to let them know," said Vanessa Romero.

The signs were created by residents as part of a contest the city held. The winners took home gift certificates.

The City of Laurens says they'll also be beefing up enforcement of litter violations as part of the campaign.
