HENDERSONVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A Hendersonville man is accused of befriending a Catholic priest only to steal the man's checks and forge them, according to the sheriff's office.

Chief Deputy Frank Stout said 43-year-old Daniel Lind allegedly befriended the elderly priest and offered to take care of his cat after the priest broke his hip and had to relocate out of state while recovering.

Stout said during that time, Lind is accused of stealing a book of checks, forging them and cashing $5,750 on the account.

Lind is being held on $42,500 bond at the Henderson County Detention Facility.
