Gunman on Columbus State University campus shot by police

COLUMBUS, GA (WALB) -

According to at statement from Columbus State University, around 2:30 Sunday afternoon CSU police got reports of a man loading a gun in a courtyard near student apartments.

Officers arrived and chased the gunman. The suspect then turned around to face police, and shots were fired.

The gunman was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. No one else was injured. The GBI is investigating.

"This is a terrible tragedy," CSU President Tim Mescon said. "We will cooperate fully with the investigation by GBI. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this, as well as their families."

The gunman was not a student at CSU.
