No stop yet to sewage spill

BULLITT COUNTY, KY (WAVE) – Sewage is spilling after a water treatment tank in Bullitt County rips apart.

"It went boom," a witness, Steven Booth said.

Booth described a tidal wave of waste. He said the water reached the driveway where he tinkers with cars.

"I'm telling you," he said, "It looked like the ocean. I could have surfed on it."

County Sanitation officials told us when the corroded outer rim broke, the tank did too.

C.W. Shepherd's warehouse is just feet from the plant.

"There was a gentleman in there, he come out, he come back and said, 'Man there's a whole lot of  "S" out there,''' Shepherd laughed. "I come out and I see what he was talking about."

The sewage is spilling at a rate of 400 thousand gallons a day. WAVE 3 News was there the first time the Mayor of Hunter's Hallow saw it for herself.

"I didn't imagine it would be this, uh," Linda Parker sighed.

The Mayor says she's worried about the more than 700 homes affected. She hopes the tank's pumps keep working.

"If the lights go out and there's no electric here, the sewage goes back to your house," she said.

The EPA is now involved. The sewage is spreading through Brooks Run Creek which flows into Floyd's Fork.

"This is not a good thing, I mean, diseases, E. coli, you don't know," Parker said.

Officials do not yet know the fix, the time it will take, or the price.

"That needs to be taken down and a new one put up, honestly because that there is rotted," Shepherd said.

People around the plant are urged to restrict the amount of water they use for things like brushing their teeth, taking a shower doing laundry.  Anything that goes into the ground will have to be pumped through that broken tank.

Also, the mayor says, no one should step into any puddles for fear of contamination.
