WALHALLA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Reports of a human hand found in Oconee County turned out to be remains of a bear, according to the sheriff's office.

Lt. Jimmy Watt said dispatchers received a call on Wednesday morning from a person who said they saw what looked to be a human hand while walking down Shadberry Road, off Burnt Tanyard Road.

Coroner Karl Addis responded to the scene along with more deputies and an officer from the crime scene unit, Watt said.

He said they found the hand in the roadway and more remains, including a head, on the side of the road.

Investigators, deputies and the coroner determined they was bear remains, which Watt said was confirmed by a DNR officer.

The remains were removed from the scene by a DNR officer.
