Faux plaque glued to side of Yale University Art Gallery

NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

An artist, who is well known in the Elm City for sparking debate about art in public places, has struck again and this time on April Fools' Day.

According to officials, the artist, who is known as BIP or Believe in People, glued a fake plaque to the side of the Yale University art gallery on Chapel Street in New Haven.

The plaque that was glued to the wall joked about a man named Sam Dilvan, who was a leader in the art world because of what he posted publicly.

It turns out Sam Dilvan is an anagram of the word, vandalism.

"To understand in the tradition of art history there have been well-recognized graffiti artists and let this be something that is acknowledged without severely punishing it is a smart move, at least one I appreciate," said Florian Koenigsberger, who is a student at Yale University.

Gallery officials said the act was even caught on one of their security cameras. Because there was no permanent damage, Yale officials said they are not pressing charges.

"It is in our interest as a teaching museum, steward of art, and community institution to return this work to a public venue for further contemplation and appreciation," Yale University said in a statement Wednesday.

Ricky at Ricky D's Rib Shack cart, which is stationed near the gallery, said he just thinks it's all good.

"It's funny," said Ricky, who added he did not see anything. "Everybody has fun with April Fools Pranks, jokes."

Yale is even going to display the bogus plaque. The public can see it in a display right by the front door on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Like the art museum itself, there won't be a charge.
