SIMPSONVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Bariatric surgery may be the most effective way to treat Type 2 Diabetes, according to a study by Cleveland Clinic researchers, and a local surgeon agrees.

"It's life transforming, it's as if a shell has been broken and the patient's true inner beauty is released," said Dr. John Scott, bariatric surgeon at Hillcrest Memorial Hospital in Simpsonville.

"So far I've lost 148 pounds since this process started," said Christopher Hulsey, 25, who claims the surgery in December cured him of the disease. "Going down a lot of clothes sizes. I have a lot more energy."

Hulsey was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes last year, he said. Hulsey said he has convinced his mother, Susan, to get the surgery as well. She has suffered with the disease for 10 years.

"It's very hard you can't function like everybody else does," said Susan Hulsey.

The procedure has its dangers, said Dr. Scott, but the results are worth it.

"We think that the risks of the surgery are always far lower than the benefits that they're gonna get with the surgery," he said.

Currently, only type 2 Diabetes patients who have a Body Mass Index of 35 or higher qualify for the surgery, but researchers involved in the study believe that requirement should be lowered, especially if the surgery is so effective at treating the disease.

Dr. Scott said people may be able to minimize or eliminate their need for diabetes medication following the surgery.
