Surveillance video may help police find men connected to downtown beating

Posted: Updated:
JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) -

Johnson City Police may be one step closer to finding men involved in a case of what police say was likely a random act of violence in downtown Johnson City.

In February, Johnson City Police responded to the downtown square parking lot around 3 a.m. where they found a man lying on the ground unresponsive after witnesses say a group of men beat him.

Nearly two months later, the man who was beat, Matthew Brookshire, is just now able to talk for the first time since the attack.

Witnesses have identified men in a surveillance video from downtown bar Capone’s that night as the men in connection with the attack.

Just a couple of days after this happened; we talked to some people who were on the scene.

One woman says bystanders told her they witnessed Brookshire waiting at the crosswalk downtown on State of Franklin to cross the road when a man hit him in the face.

Witnesses say after he was hit, Brookshire hit his head on the crosswalk pole and fell to the ground and the group of men started hitting and kicking Brookshire in his face and upper body.

Police who say the men who did this may have been from out of town, and likely didn't know the victim.

“Our investigation has showed us at this point, he did not know these people, probably never seen them before, [they were] probably highly intoxicated, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Lt. Steve Sherfey with Johnson City Police Department said.

Though witnesses identify the men in the video as the ones who attacked Brookshire, they don't know who or where they are.

A reward is being offered for information that could help solve this case.

Anyone who has any information is urged to call Crimestoppers at 423-434-6158 or call the Johnson City Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division at 423-434-6166.
