SENECA, SC (FOX Carolina) -
The former principal of Blue Ridge Elementary School in Oconee County was arrested after police said she failed to report the abuse of a student.
According to the Seneca police report, the school's principal Idasa Cobb, 41, received a call on Friday regarding the sexual assault of a student, which had happened in the county.
According to police, Cobb received a call Friday about 4 p.m. and the caller advised that a student was being sexually assaulted. At the time, police said Cobb was with two assistant principals and told them she would take care of it.
She notified guidance counselors, who interviewed the child on Monday, but the Department of Social Services was not contacted until Tuesday, police said. The report said police did not learn of the report until 4 p.m. Tuesday when the school resource officer was contacted.
Police arrested Cobb, charging her with failure of certain persons required to report. According to her arrest warrant, Cobb failed to notify law enforcement regarding information she received that gave her, "reason to believe that a child has been or may be abused or neglected."
According to a spokesperson for the School District of Oconee County, Cobb was initially placed on administrative leave with pay but has since submitted her resignation to the district. The rest of the district's statement read as follows:
"The allegations of child abuse do not involve a district employee and they are not alleged to have occurred at school. The district is fully cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation and cannot comment further given the ongoing investigation and confidential student issues involved. Kathy Eichler, who previously served as principal of Blue Ridge and Code elementary schools, will serve as interim principal for the time being."
Police said the Oconee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the assault case.
