GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville County deputies said a mother has been arrested and charged after a Tanglewood Middle School student arrived at school with injuries and was taken to the hospital on Friday.

Master Deputy Jonathan Smith said the student arrived at school with a cut on the back of her head that was bleeding.

Smith said the girl was brought to the nurse where it was discovered that before leaving for school the 13-year-old got into a verbal altercation over a cell phone with her mother, 30-year-old Gladis Trujillo.

Trujillo then hit the child in the back of the head several times with her hand, Smith said.

According to Smith, the altercation escalated and the mother picked up a hair straightening iron and started hitting the child on the back of the head with it.

According to Oby Lyles, spokesperson for Greenville County Schools, deputies were contacted immediately, as the law requires school officials to report any suspected or possible case of child abuse.

Greenville County deputies said the student was taken to the hospital, but the extent of her injuries was not disclosed.

Trujillo has been charged with unlawful neglect of a child.

She is awaiting a bond hearing at the Greenville County Detention Center.
