SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

More than 100 people gathered Friday afternoon to remember a beloved community leader who Spartanburg County deputies said was shot to death while driving home from church Wednesday night.

A prayer vigil was held in honor of Emery Williams at the Spartanburg County Foundation on East Kennedy Street, where Williams' wife is a trustee.

Sheriff Chuck Wright said the 64-year old was on the phone with his wife when he turned onto Willis Road and gunfire rang out.

Deputies said they arrived to find Williams dead in his car, which had crashed into a concrete pillar.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger said Williams died of multiple gunshot wounds to the body.

Williams' wife, Kay Williams, is the owner of the J. W. Woodward Funeral Home on Howard Street.

Lt. Tony Ivey with the Spartanburg Co. Sheriff's Office said Friday that deputies are pursuing leads in the case but so far no suspects have been named.

At the vigil, Williams's step-daughter Stinson Ferguson told the crowd she was "disappointed at how (her step-father) left this world."

Several people prayed for peace for the family and community.

People also offered prayers for the investigators looking for Williams' killer.

Friday's vigil was organized by the Spartanburg County Foundation and the Chapman Cultural Center.
