TRAVELERS REST, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate family fighting through a tragedy has a warning for others after the hospitalization of a teen.

They're urging everyone who bikes or skateboards to wear a helmet because their loved one didn't and is now fighting through the effects of a serious head injury.

Alexx Terry was hurt last week in Travelers Rest. His family said he has a long road ahead to recovery. They said he was simply skateboarding down a hill when he fell and hit his head.

"The skateboard kicked out from under him, and he actually hit his head twice, which caused a skull fracture and a bruise in the front of his brain," said Johnny Poole, the stepfather of the victim.

Terry's family said they knew immediately his injuries were serious.

"After he fell down, he had a seizure. EMS was called, and first responders showed up," said Poole.

Poole said the teen was eventually put into a medically induced coma at Greenville Children's Hospital. His family said the teen was successfully brought out of the coma Sunday, but still has a long road to recovery.

"If anything kids need a helmet, it could have happened to anyone, but it happened to my son," said Poole.

Family is asking for prayers for a speedy recovery. They have also started a fundraising page  to help pay for the teen's medical expenses.
