WATERLOO, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies are investigating a fatal shooting in Laurens County after a Waterloo man was gunned down while mowing his lawn Tuesday.

Sheriff Ricky Chastain said 63-year-old John Lamar Lever has been detained after the shooting on Cochise Drive in Waterloo.

In court on Wednesday, Lever was officially charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime and murder. He was denied bond.

Coroner Nick Nichols said the victim of Tuesday's shooting, Harold Price, died of two gunshot wounds.

According to Chastain, Lever had a history with the neighborhood, including a harassment charge pending against the wife of the victim.

Price's family told FOX Carolina he was cutting the grass when he was shot. Jennifer Norman, Price's stepdaughter, said Lever lived across the street from Price, and family feared the feud would become violent.

"She [Price's wife] called me crying and said it finally happened," Norman said. "Just constant harassment trying to get my stepfather to instigate it, but he never would. My stepfather has told me numerous times that he was scared for his life."

Neighbors in the area, including Lever's own relatives, said he was a "threatening" man and were afraid for their safety. Price's family said they reported numerous threats Lever allegedly made up until the incident Tuesday.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is assisting the sheriff's office in the investigation. Deputies said Lever would likely appear in court sometime Wednesday.

Chastain also said this isn't the first time Lever has been involved in a shooting in the neighborhood, either. He said Lever shot a neighbor in a dispute in the same area in 2011.

He said the Laurens County Sheriff's Office brought the case of the previous shooting to the solicitor's office, but they determined it was self defense.

Lever's next court appearance is scheduled for May 30.
