GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The annual Special Olympics Spring Games will begin Wednesday as several Upstate districts will compete and honor local kids and adults.

The Special Olympics of South Carolina provides sports and athletic training opportunities throughout the year for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and the annual Spring Games is one of the highlights of the year.

Starting Wednesday, each local SOSC district will host their own games. In Greenville County, the opening ceremonies are set for 9:45 a.m. at Furman University. Local law enforcement carried the torch from the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center to the college starting at 8 a.m.

Approximately 1,100 athletes and 1,500 volunteers will participate in Greenville County's event.

In Anderson County, 640 athletes are competing at Westside High School with the opening ceremonies and Parade of Athletes starting at 9:30 a.m.

Then on Thursday, the Cherokee County Spring Games will take place at Gaffney High School with 150 athletes competing. The opening ceremonies begin at 9:30 a.m.

Tuesday April 15, the Spartanburg and Union County games will take place at the South Carolina School for Deaf and Blind with opening ceremonies starting at 9:45 a.m. There will be 420 athletes competing.

Then on Friday, April 25, Oconee and Pickens County will host their games at the Rock Norman Track and Field Complex at Clemson University. They have 600 athletes registered to compete with the opening ceremonies starting at 9:30 a.m.
