UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Two men are recovering after deputies said an intoxicated Union man attacked them, one with a thick electrical cord and the other a garden hoe.

Union County deputies said they were called to a home on Duncan Avenue on Tuesday afternoon where they found the victims and suspect, Paul Rice, 53.

When one of the victims showed up at the home, witnesses said Rice went after him and began swinging a thick electrical cord around, hitting the man several times, according to the deputy's report.

The victim defended himself, hitting Rice, deputies said. They said they found Rice with a knot and cut on his head. That's when Rice stole the keys out of the victim's car then would not give them back, the report said.

Rice then hit a nearby car with the cord, causing $1,500 in damage to the fender, deputies said.

Deputies said Rice was not finished, turning his attention to another man who he went after with a garden hoe. Deputies said another man tried to intervene and calm Rice down, but Rice hit him with the hoe on his face and hand, causing severe cuts.

Paramedics took Rice and the two victims to the hospital. Rice was later booked into the jail on charges of malicious damage to personal property, two counts of second-degree assault and battery, and petit larceny.
