Springdale Police say a case involving a woman claiming to have been sexually assaulted by a man impersonating a police officer was made up.

In a noon news conference, Chief Kevin Cornett said no decision had been made on whether or not they will be bringing charges against the unidentified woman in this case.

Investigators with SLED sat down and presented their evidence to the victim Thursday morning. The 24-year-old Midlands Tech student got up and walked out before investigators finished.

Police began investigating the case back in October when the woman came forward. She told investigators a man using a small blue light on his dashboard stopped her in the 1000 block of Wattling Road.

The woman then said the suspect approached the vehicle and informed her that her tag lamp was out.

Investigators were then told the man pulled the woman out of her car, repeatedly struck her in the head, dragged her into the woods and sexually assaulted her before leaving the scene.

The woman described the man as a white man in his early 20's to mid-30's, with light brown or red hair, light colored eyes and no facial hair. The suspect was wearing a black T-shirt with the word "POLICE" written on the front, a black windbreaker-style jacket, khaki pants, and black police style boots.

Cornett said police conducted more than 300 interviews about the case and used resources from several other law enforcement agencies to try and find a suspect. They found no fingerprints or DNA from anyone.

Despite the false report, Cornett says victims shouldn't be hesitant to report crime.

"I start by believing what you're telling me. When you're telling me something has happened I'm going to believe everything you told me and I'm going to give you every resource I can to find the man or person who did this to you and bring them to justice, but we also follow the evidence," said Cornett.
