ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Whenever you see Johnny Honeycutt get into a black pickup truck, you find out pretty quickly he's a Caleb Johnson fan.

"People will ask, 'Are you Caleb's brother?'"

He said he usually explains that he's not and that he's a big fan. His truck is adorned with American Idol voting numbers and Johnson's name.

"I used to work with Caleb down at Ingles," Honeycutt said.

And now, Honeycutt says he makes sure he watches Johnson's performances on American Idol. That's because he said he made Johnson a promise.

"If he made it on the show that I would break my phone voting for him," Honeycutt said.

And when Johnson advances to the next round, he changes the number on the truck. Now that Johnson is one of the top seven contestants, Honeycutt will change the number eight to seven on the truck.

"I'm giving him 200 votes a week and love and support," Honeycutt said.

And that's what David Johnson does too. He's Caleb Johnson's father.

"His passion is to bring a lot of joy and happiness to a lot of people," David Johnson said.

He drives a van with a picture of Caleb Johnson's face on it as well as phone numbers for fans to vote.

"I look at it as a blessing no matter what happens," David Johnson said.

It's not uncommon to see Caleb Johnson's face around his hometown of Asheville. It's plastered on restaurants and businesses.

On Wednesday's show, he sang his version of the song Faithfully by the rock band Journey. He received a lot of praise from judges and his fans. Caleb Johnson's father, a former football coach, gives him tips on stage presence, perseverance and pacing.

"I said, 'It's not a race, it's a marathon,'" David Johnson explained.

And Caleb Johnson's father and Honeycutt both want him to win.

"When he wins it all, we're going to put a big winner on there (the truck) and we're gonna run and scream and shout," Honeycutt said.

As of Thursday night, Caleb Johnson's version of the song Faithfully was No. 2 on the iTunes rock chart. His parents said when he performed the song Wednesday night, he was sick with bronchitis. They said they're very proud of him.
