GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Laurens County judge has sentenced a man to 40 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of murder in the fatal shooting of the owner of Ardis Roofing.

On Nov. 7, 2012, 65-year-old Bill Ardis was found shot to death at his Waterloo home that he shared with the suspect, Phillip Hollingsworth, and his girlfriend, Shayla Gaines.

According to deputies, 41-year-old Hollingsworth shot Ardis once with a shotgun during an argument between him and Gaines. Deputies said Hollingsworth left the scene of the shooting in Ardis' vehicle with Ardis' pistol and 24-year-old Gaines.

Gaines told investigators that she convinced Hollingsworth to get out and get something at a convenience store in Greenwood County, and she drove away and called police. Family told FOX Carolina that Ardis had allowed Hollingsworth and Gaines to live with him and gave Hollingsworth a job with his roofing company.

The search for Hollingsworth kept schools in the area on lockdown on Nov. 8 and Hollingsworth turned himself in to deputies in Greenwood County later in the day, deputies said.

According to Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo, the jury deliberated for four hours Thursday in Hollingsworth's murder trial, finding him guilty. Circuit Judge Frank Addy sentenced the defendant to 40 years in prison.
