ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Anderson man has been charged with stealing more than $7,000 in jewelry from a home he was renovating in Anderson County in 2013, according to the sheriff's office.

Lt. Sheila Cole said, between Sept. 13 and Oct. 12, 25-year-old Justin Smith was employed by a company renovating the home in Anderson when he suspected to have taken various items of jewelry.

Smith was arrested on April 8 on the charge of grand larceny and released on $10,000 bond on Thursday evening, according to Cole.

"Be careful who you hire to do work in or around your home. Get references and take the time to check them. Verify that they are licensed and insured for the State of South Carolina.  A company with an updated license will not want to risk losing it, so they are more careful about the workers they hire. Regardless, don't leave your valuables out in the open. Put them away. And don't leave temporary workers alone in your home," said Sheriff John Skipper.
