PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Fire crews monitored a brush fire near the summit of Table Rock as many more battled brush fire on Sassafras Mountain in northern Pickens County Saturday.

Four fire departments and the U.S. Forestry Service responded to the fire that officials said spanned over 100 acres.

Scott Hawkins with the U.S. Forest Commission said the fire was about 50% contained Saturday evening.

Hawkins said crews would monitor the fire overnight, but fire fighting operations would stop around nightfall and resume on Sunday morning.

Hawkins said the wildfire no longer threatened any structures and that firefighters expected the fire to weaken overnight.

Hawkins said a brush fire also ignited near the summit of Table Rock.

Hawkins said vegetation on the rocky outcliffs were burning and that fire crews would not be able to access the area on foot.

The main concern was take smoke may affect hikers in Table Rock State Park.

Hawkins said they do no not know the cause of either fire and that it will take several days to fully contain the Sassafras Mountain fire.

Holly Springs Fire Chief Roy Holcombe said smoke from the brush fire could be seen all the way from Main Street in Pickens earlier on Friday.
