Police: Man charged after breaking into, stealing from DSS office

UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Union Police have said a man faces several charges after he broke into the Union County Department of Social Services building, took shelter there, and then stole several things from the facility, including a car, over the Christmas holiday.

According to warrants, James Gist, 35, of Berry Farm Road, broke into the DSS building sometime between Dec. 22, 2013 and Dec. 27, 2013.

Gist shattered two windows at the building on South Mountain Street to gain access, police said.

Warrants state that Gist unlawfully lived in the facility and charged him with utilities theft.

He's also charged with burglary and larceny for stealing items from the facility, including a Samsung cell phone, police said.

Warrants state Gist also stole a blue Chevy Impala registered to Union County DSS. He was charged with grand larceny enhanced in regard to the vehicle theft.

Gist was arrested Friday and is currently being held in the Union County Detention Center, officers said.
