Arson teams investigate fire that destroyed Asheville building

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The Asheville-Buncombe Arson Task Force Department is investigating a fire that destroyed a building on Merrimon Avenue in downtown Asheville.

Firefighters said the fire was fully involved when they arrived at 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters said a business operated out of the lower level and two people lived in an apartment on the second floor.

The two residents were able to get out of the building safely with help from a firefighter who had to break through a bottom-level door, according to officials.

By 5 a.m. firefighters said they had put out the blaze.

Red Cross is assisting the two victims of the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
