A participant in the Goodwill Mud Run was seriously injured during the race on Sunday, a spokesperson for Goodwill confirmed to FOX Carolina News.
The man went into one of the water obstacles at the beginning of the course and broke his neck, friends of the man told FOX Carolina News.
"One of the teammates plunged into the water and did not come up immediately," Brad Majors of the Goodwill said.
Friends said he became paralyzed from the neck down as soon as he hit the water.
A spokesperson for Greenville Health Systems said the man was in critical condition at 1:30 p.m. on Monday.
The event organizers said participants must sign a waiver before the race.
