GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

High winds and cool temperatures arrived in the western Carolinas for Tuesday night, causing downed trees and powerlines.

In the mountains of western North Carolina, winds gusted at 50-60 mph. The Upstate is expecting gusts up to 30-40 mph through the evening, and then calming throughout the night.

With the heavy rain, then wind, we could see trees go down as well as powerlines, according to FOX Carolina Chief Meteorologist Kendra Kent.

Kent said she has already had reports of powerlines down near the state border in Tryon, NC.

The wind and rain will also be accompanied by sub-freezing temperatures in the night.

Kent recommended residents protect sensitive plants as the temperatures drop below freezing.
