Police: Woman with bat swings at officer, digs nails into his arm

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Toledo woman got more than she bargained for when she picked a fight with Toledo Police officers.

Police say it happened yesterday in the 600 block of Fernwood Avenue.

Police say the suspect was initially the victim, until she picked up a baseball bat and threatened to use it on the officers.

"[She] had a bat in her hand and was slashing out at another woman, who was trying to defend herself with a stick," said Toledo Police Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

When TPD arrived on scene, they say Ashley Daniels, also known as Ashley Jenkins, had a baseball bat in hand and was swinging; fighting with another woman in a front yard on Fernwood.

Police say the fight broke out because Daniels claimed the victim's son broke into her home around the corner on Norwood.

TPD says Daniels was the one who called police before marching over with her bat, taking matters into her own hands.

"She refused to drop the bat, made some comments, like she wasn't afraid to use it on police," said Heffernan.

Officers went to take her down but she didn't go without a fight.

"The woman with the bat struck one of the officers in the head with her hand and was also digging her fingernails into his arm," said Heffernan.

The officer and victim are OK, but police say Daniels may not be as lucky. She's charged with assaulting an officer.

"She went from potentially being a victim, somebody breaking into her house, to being a felon," said Heffernan.
