LAURENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A man is in custody after SWAT was called to a home in Laurens County on Wednesday night, Sheriff Ricky Chastain confirmed to FOX Carolina.

According to Chastain, the incident began as an attempted robbery at Sam's Country Store on Torrington Road in Laurens.

A deputy received information about the suspect and the vehicle. The deputy spotted them at a home on Forest Road a short time later, Chastain said.

Chastain said the people inside fled the home in which the suspect lives, leaving a 2-year-old child inside with him.

The SWAT team was called and entered the home just after 8 p.m., getting the child out, according to Chastain. He said the child was not being held in the home by the suspect.

The suspect was found in a back bedroom with a weapon, he said.

According to the suspect's wife, who did not want to be identified, she was cooking dinner when the SWAT team stormed their home, making everyone leave the home at gunpoint.

She said they did not flee the home, and the family tried to let the officers know there was still a 2-year-old child inside. She said deputies would not let them back in to get the child.

The suspect's wife said they do not allow weapons inside their home and the only thing that could have been found was a BB gun. She said she does not believe the accusations against her husband.

Chastain said the suspect, Randall Scott Gambrell, 26, was taken to the Laurens County Detention Center and will be charged with attempted armed robbery.

Gambrell is being held on $50,000 bond.
