SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg County deputies said a robber was arrested Wednesday night after a Dollar General clerk, with the help of others, was able to keep him from running away with the register.

Deputies were called to the report of a robbery at the Dollar General store located at 5098 Chesnee Highway at 9 p.m.

According to the deputy's report, a man entered the store, picked up some items and as he was headed out, a clerk told him she could ring up his items. Deputies said the clerk rang up the items, but the man told her he left his money in his car.

He started to walk out, then turned around, ran behind the counter and grabbed the register, deputies said. The man tried to run out, but the clerk grabbed his clothes, throwing him around to try to stop him, deputies said.

Others nearby jumped in to help pin him down until officers arrived, according to the report.

Deputies spoke with several witnesses who confirmed the clerk's report, and the man, identified as Tony Helton, was arrested. Deputies said Helton had to be taken to the hospital for treatment for his injuries he received during the fight with the clerk before going to jail.

Helton, 42, of Chesnee, was charged with two counts of strong arm robbery.
