WILLIAMSTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A former Williamston police officer has been arrested by agents with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division in connection with a domestic incident on Wednesday, SLED announced.

Christopher Whitfield, 30, was charged with criminal domestic violence in Anderson County, a SLED spokesperson said.

SLED said they investigated the case at the request of the Williamston Police Department.

Whitfield was a former sergeant in Williamston.

In March, Williamston Police Chief Tony Taylor told FOX Carolina that Whitfield was put on administrative leave without pay following another incident where he was charged with criminal domestic violence.

According to SLED, Whitfield is no longer with the department.

Chief Taylor said Whitfield had been with the department for about two years and he held the rank of sergeant.

If convicted, Whitfield could face up to 30 days in jail or a fine up to $2,500.
