GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

No one wants to think about a mass shooting at their church, but Bob Phillips and his team have to think about it.

"We are basically the sheepdogs of our flock," said Phillips, who is head of security at Abundant Life church in Greenville. Not many people know this, but he's highly trained.

"We don't pretend to be police officers," said Phillips. "More than likely, most of our church members don't have a safety team - they just see us as the greeters and the people out front."

Thanks in part to Jim Braziel at Sharpshooters Indoor Range, Phillips and his security team have training from former officers and special ops personnel.

"If we did have an incident, we'd have people trained to handle it," said Braziel, general manager at Sharpshooters.

He has developed a 20-hour course that church members of any denomination can complete to protect their congregation if a service turns violent.

"If they complete our course, they will be a SLED certified level III officer; a security guard," said Braziel.

Churches can sign up as a group and can form their own "Church Safety Team," in which they learn the mindset of an active shooter and learn to use deadly force if necessary.

"We do teach the use of deadly force, and we teach that as an absolute last resort," Braziel said.

The recent shooting at a Jewish community center in Kansas City solidifies the need for more security at churches, mosques and synagogues.

The course is $225 for a group. For more information, click here.
