TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A Pinal County man has just been sentenced for the 2009 stabbing of a fellow inmate.

This update just came in from the Pinal County Attorney's Office, saying Vance Johnson will now serve 28 years in prison for using a makeshift knife to stab a fellow inmate.  The incident happened in January 2009, at the State Prison Complex in Florence, as the two were headed back to their cells after dinner. According to prison officials the makeshift knife was found in the toilet in Johnson's cell.

Johnson was initially charged with the following - one count of dangerous or deadly assault by a prisoner and one count of premeditated attempted first degree.  Johnson was convicted on the deadly assault charge, and acquitted on the attempted murder charge.

The inmate survived the stabbing, according to prison officials, but suffered a severe brain injury.

"Ignoring crime occurring in our jails and prisons only breeds further violence and these dangerous individuals committing crimes against fellow inmates or correctional personnel no longer escape prosecution in Pinal," said Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles, in a recent release. "For too long prosecutors in this County treated crimes arising from prison as less vital to seek justice; Johnson now has an additional and significant term to contemplate our change in policy behind bars."
