WILLIAMSTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A woman who was shot in the head is in critical condition and her husband has been charged, Williamston police said on Thursday.

Police said 54-year-old Sandra Smith was shot around 10 p.m. on April 22 at a home on South Hamilton Street in the city of Williamston.

Lt. Ken Ebernickle with Williamston police said her husband, 53-year-old Billy Ray Smith, was arrested the next day.

Investigators said Smith was originally charged with obstructing justice as he hindered the investigation.

Police said they later determined he was the shooter.

Police said the weapon used in the shooting was recovered through a cooperative effort with the sheriff's office.

Ebernickle said the victim was in critical but stable condition as of Thursday evening.

Smith is being held at the Anderson County Detention Center on the charges of attempted murder, possession of a firearm during a violent crime and possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a crime of violence.
