An Akron Public Schools elementary teacher has been placed on administrative leave after a child apparently stepped on an insulin needle while emptying the trash.
It happened Wednesday at David Hill Elementary School.
19 Action News has learned the 7-year-old first grader was taking out the classroom trash when the needle fell out and she stepped on it. The child then went to her teacher, who placed a band aid on her injury.
"The teacher did not take the little girl to the office for attention or inform the principal about the incident," said Mark Williamson of Akron Schools.
Instead, the child went home and told her parents about the incident. Her parents immediately contacted the school.
Chief Communications Officer Mark Williamson tells 19 Action News that this is not the way the school operates.
"Protocol is that teachers notify the principal and promptly take the student to the school nurse in the event of an injury or accident. Further protocol is the principal would then contact the parents."
Williamson adds, "protocol is for anyone using injection needles (to administer medication) to dispose of needles in special containers provided at every school building. All employees are made aware of this by APS."
The teacher has been placed on leave while school officials investigate whether the proper protocols were followed.
The child was taken to the hospital to have her puncture wound examined.
The needle, which is believed to belong to the teacher, is set to be tested.
