GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

At Radio Shack on Pelham Road, Internet security cameras are becoming more and more popular, but experts there say they come with risk of computer hackers.

"Anything that you're running through Wi-Fi can be hacked," said Russell McElveen, store manager at Radio Shack.

A father in Texas recently learned that the hard way, when a hacker got into his network and started talking to his toddlers through their Internet camera.

"As a father, I'm supposed to protect her against people like this," said Mark Gilbert. "It's a little embarrassing, you know, to say the least, but it's not gonna happen again."

Embarrassing, says Gilbert, but McElveen says it's not uncommon, as Wi-Fi enabled devices take over our lives.

McElveen said people who have anything Wi-Fi enabled, especially cameras, should have more complicated passwords to protect from hackers.

"Ten to twelve characters, using numbers, using upper and lower case letters," said McElveen. "Change it once a month."
