WHITMIRE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Union County deputies said they have an arrest warrant for a Whitmire man accused of holding up the local Dollar General on Saturday then leading officers on a manhunt through the woods.
Deputies were called to the store at 4:40 p.m. after a man threatened to have a gun in order to try to steal cash from the register and several items he had picked up inside, according to the sheriff's office report.
The suspect brought several items to the register and as the clerk started to ring him up, deputies said he told her to, "give me everything in your register or I'm going to shoot you," then pointed to his pants.
The clerk asked him if he was serious, he said yes, then took the bagged up items and fled the store, deputies said. They said he left without any money from the register.
Someone else in the store heard the exchange and ran outside after the suspect fled, deputies said. She was able to get the car's tag number, which deputies said was reported stolen from Greenville County.
Deputies said they later located the stolen vehicle at a home on Maybinton Road where they tracked the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Jeffrey Gedeist, into the woods with bloodhounds for four hours before he was able to get away.
Gedeist is wanted on one count of armed robbery after deputies said he fled with the $51.54 worth of items without paying after threatening to shoot and harm the clerk.
This was the second robbery at the store in less than a week. Deputies said a man and woman held up the store on April 21 and they were arrested a few days later.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 864-427-0800.
