GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The American Red Cross has released tips to help people to be prepared and even suggested a smartphone app as severe weather approaches the western Carolinas.

The Red Cross released their flood preparedness checklist, which gives a list of tips to stay safe and essential supplies as severe hits. Water, food, flashlights, medications, batteries and a first aid kit top the list of supplies.

Their tornado safety checklist gives an extensive list of things to do before, during and after a tornado strikes. They suggested people pick a saferoom in your home where family and pets can gather during a tornado.

They said the safest place to be during a tornado is in an underground shelter, basement or saferoom.

The Red Cross also recommended people download their tornado app as the potential for severe weather approaches. The app, which is available for iOS and Android, has an "I'm safe" button which notifies friends and family that you are OK and lets them find the locations of Red Cross shelters.

The app gives off a high-pitched siren sound and a warning alert when a tornado warning has been issued for a user's location.

The Red Cross said they have sent out more than 2.1 million severe weather notifications over the weekend through their app.

Severe weather is expected between Monday evening and Wednesday in the western Carolinas after recent tornadoes struck Arkansas and multiple other states.

The Red Cross said more than 200 people spent Sunday night in shelters supported by Red Cross workers in heavily hit Arkansas.

"Our thoughts and sympathy are with all those impacted by these horrific tornadoes," said Richard Reed, senior vice president of Disaster Cycle Services for the Red Cross. "Red Cross disaster teams are helping now and will continue to help for weeks to come."
