SWANNANOA, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office is telling the public to be wary after a fox that bit an area resident tested positive for rabies.

On Wednesday, deputies responded to Stone Drive in Swannanoa after receiving a call about the fox attacking the resident.

The location was close to Owen Middle School, which was placed on lockdown.

Deputies said when Animal Services arrived, the fox acted aggressively and ran towards officers.

The fox was subsequently put down.

The victim of the attack was taken to the hospital where she began the rabies shot series, deputies said.

The fox was submitted for rabies testing. Deputies said it tested positive.

Animal Services will be reminding residents to make sure their pets are up-to-date on their rabies vaccines and distributing literature.
