Hundreds walk in Westfield to fight multiple sclerosis

WESTFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Hundreds made their way to Stanley Park on Sunday to help in the fight against multiple sclerosis.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society held its 20th annual walk.

Residents strolled the five-mile track to raise money for the foundation.

Organizers said they hoped to raise $70,000 through this year's event.

They said over the last two decades, people's awareness of the disease has really picked up.

"When I started with the MS society 25 years ago, and I was diagnosed with MS 32 years ago, there was absolutely nothing available for treatment except steroids," said Nancy Dlugoenski, development manager for the MS society. "In the past 16 years, there are 13 new drugs on the market to help people with MS."

MS is a disease that interrupts the flow of information between the brain and body and can stop people from moving forward in their lives.

This was the first year the event was in Stanley Park, as it had previously called Forest Park in Springfield home.
