Study: South Carolina 5th worst for working moms

Posted: Updated:

A new report from a personal finance website says South Carolina once again finds itself at the bottom of another list -- this time for working moms.

WalletHub's study found the Palmetto State is the fifth worst state in the U.S. for moms in the workforce.

The study, which included all 50 states and the District of Columbia, weighed nine different metrics to come up with their results: day care quality, child care costs, access to pediatric services, public school quality, gender pay gap, ratio of female to male executives, parental leave policy, length of the average woman's workday, and average commute time.

The study says South Carolina has some of the poorest quality but cheapest day cares in the country -- 44th and 2nd, respectively.

WalletHub also gives low grades to the state's public school system, saying it is the fourth worst in the country.

In general, most southern states rank poorly in the study, with Mississippi and Louisiana joining South Carolina near the bottom at 50th and 51st.

On the high end, Oregon, D.C., Vermont, Maine and New York round out the top five.
