GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A driver has been charged after an SUV struck a building containing a Christian bookstore in Greenville on Monday.

Assistant Fire Chief Mark Jones said the building was unsafe after the vehicle struck it near the Cross Way store at 2406 E. North St. in Greenville.

A witness told FOX Carolina they saw the vehicle hit a car at the bottom of the parking lot before spinning up and hitting the building.

"I just kind of closed my eyes there at the end and said 'it's over' because at one point all I saw was the front of her car going at a very high rate and there was nowhere to go," said Jenine Owens, manager of the Dollar Tree store next door to Cross Way.

Owens said she was unloading a truck when she heard a pop from the road, then moments later saw the car headed for her and another person.

"The freezer guy almost got hit too if it wasn't for the column she would have went right into his truck," Owens said.

The SUV crashed into the brick of the facade, just missing them. Jones said a tactical team put up temporary wood shores to secure the building's brick facade until permanent repairs are made.

Officer Jason Rampey said the driver of the SUV has been charged with failing to yield at a left turn.

He said the 58-year-old woman was heading westbound on Pleasantburg Drive when she attempted to make a left across the street to get into the bookstore parking lot.

Her SUV struck a car in the third lane, Rampey said. He said she then stepped on the gas as opposed to the brake and accelerated across the parking lot, striking the building.

Firefighters on scene said the driver was taken to the hospital but the injuries were unknown at this time.

The driver's name has not been released at this time.
