SWANNANOA, NC (FOX Carolina) -

ArtSpace Charter School in Swannanoa was placed on lockdown on Tuesday afternoon while deputies respond to a domestic incident involving weapons close by.

Students at the school were given clearance to be transported home while deputies had the person contained at a residence on Laurel Drive, according to Public Information Officer Natalie Bailey.

Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan said at around 2:30 p.m. a female called the sheriff's office to report that her partner had threatened her with a gun.

Duncan said the woman was able to get out of the house when deputies arrived.

The man barricaded himself in the house and refused to come out, Duncan said.

Officers negotiated with the man for an hour and a half before using "chemical munition" to bring him out, Duncan said.

Around 5:45 p.m., Bailey said 50-year-old John Saunders Sr. was taken into custody following a standoff.

Bailey said Saunders will undergo a psychiatric evaluation and there are no charges at this time.

Sheriff Duncan said no one was injured in the incident.
