COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - State, local and federal officials are meeting to discuss ways to protect South Carolina's children who have been living in places associated with drugs.

U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles and other officials are scheduled to hold a news conference on Thursday at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Columbia.

Representatives from the State Law Enforcement Division and the University of South Carolina Children's Law Center are also expected to participate.

They'll be announcing a statewide alliance working to implement new guidelines on how to care for children removed from situations involving drugs. Nettles says the children could be in danger of physical and mental abuse and may have been exposed to violence and other dangerous situations.
